Sony Corp. plans to stop shipping portable MiniDisc Walkmans from September due to shrinking demand, according to the report from nikkei.com.
Added to Sony’s WalkMan line up in 1992, MiniDisc cartridges contain an optical disc with a 6.4cm diameter, about half the size of a CD. Their compactness made them convenient to carry around.
As of March the company had sold roughly 22 million units.
Despite the MiniDisks player’s end, the actual MiniDisc cartridges will still be available, along with stereos that are capable of MiniDisk playback.
