Samsung Saw Profit Fall 30%

Samsung recently  announced a 30 percent dip in first-quarter profits over the same quarter in 2010.

Samsung posted a net profit of 2.78 trillion won ($2.6 billion), down from four trillion won in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue was 37 trillion won, up nearly 7% from a year ago.

The company says its Telecom, Semiconductor and Digital Media & Appliances divisions drove revenue growth in the quarter. However, lower semiconductor memory prices and reduced profitability in LCD panels and TV sets meant overall profitability was down.

Smartphones accounted for 18 percent of Samsung’s total handset sales during the first quarter, up sharply from just 4 percent a year earlier, Samsung said. It has publically set a goal of selling 60 million smartphones in 2011.

Samsung and Apple have been embroiled recently in an escalating legal battle. Apple filed suit against Samsung earlier this month, claiming the Galaxy S line of smartphones and tablets had copied the iPhone and iPad.

Samsung said it was suing Apple in South Korea, Japan and Germany, accusing Apple of patent infringement.
