PopCap looks set to become the next casual game studio to be acquired following the likes of PlayFish, Chillingo, Playdom, and Ngmoco.
According to various sources a buyer is set to cough up a hefty $1 billion to acquire PopCap games. That is almost 10 times PopCap’s annual revenues. PopCap is best known for the game Bejeweled which has sold 50 million to date and is expected to be released across all major consoles later this year.
There were initial rumors floating around that Zynga was in the mix, but the high asking price seemed to put it off. Elsewhere sources have speculated that Electronic Arts and even Chinese Internet giant Tencent were in the running. At this stage the potential buyer remains unclear.
