Microsoft-Skype Deal Approved By FTC

Microsoft Corp.’s purchase of Internet calling service Skype has been approved by the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust authority, according to a report.

The FTC recently announced that it had finished its review of the buyout so it can proceed if the Department of Justice also approves. Both agencies must review any deal worth more than $65.2 million, according to the FTC.

Microsoft decided to buy Skype for $8.5 billion.

Microsoft expects 170 million monthly users of Skype can strengthen their position in telecommunications area.  In 2010, about 42 percent of its calls were made on video on Skype.
