A report from Inside Facebook, the third-party company responsible for monitoring Facebook, suggested that Facebook lost 6 million user in America, 100,000 in the UK and 1.5 million in Canada in May. Facebook reacted unusually to the report questioning the accuracy of these figures.
Facebook insisted that on the contrary other analysis firms had reported growth in user number during the same period.
In a statement released by Facebook it assured us that it was very pleased with the growth of Facebook.
"From time to time, we see stories about Facebook losing users in some regions. Some of these reports use data extracted from our advertising tool, which provides broad estimates on the reach of Facebook ads and isn’t designed to be a source for tracking the overall growth of Facebook,"
"We are very pleased with our growth and with the way people are engaged with Facebook. More than 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day,"
However Inside Facebook confessed that although Facebook has continued to grow, it is in fact reliant on new users in nations such as India, Indonesia and the Philippines.
It is not the first time that analysts have claimed that users are leaving Facebook. But as always Facebook prefers to deny such figures for fear that it will taint its brand ahead of its IPO.
