Toshiba is posied to agree the acquisition of Swiss metering technology firm Landis+Gryr for 200 million yen ($2.5 billion), according to some reports.
Landis+Gyr, based in the low-tax Swiss canton of Zug, is a leader by revenues in manufacturing electricity meters, with sales of $1.36bn in 2009.
The Japanese electronics giant has obtained preferential negotiation rights with an Australian investment group that has the major stake in the Swiss firm.
With an acquisition, Toshiba would add a technology that helps utilities and consumers monitor energy use to its so-called smart community division, which aims to help cities become more energy efficient.
