EBay to Seek Acquisitions of Local-Language Sites in Asia, Eastern Europe

John Donahoe EBay CEO said in an interview Monday that the company may expand to make acquisitions, with some of the $2.4 billion it will get from the deal of its remaining 30% stake in Internet-phone provider Skype SARL.

Two weeks ago, Microsoft Corp. signed deal with Skype of purchasing Skype with $8.5 billion, which made eBay to fully leave the online telephony business it bought in 2005.

"We will continue to use that balance sheet to invest in organic growth, make acquisitions selectively and provide return to our shareholders with stock buybacks," John Donahoe said.

"Our purpose is to bring consumers the best experience to find what they want, how they want and when they want it, whether it’s on eBay or otherwise," Mr. Donahoe said. "A lot of eBay innovation will be around mobile."

"Soon I will be able to take a photo of your shoes and find out where I can buy them and how much they cost," Mr. Donahoe said. This "huge explosion" of information will put large numbers of buyers and sellers in contact, he added.

Currently, online retailers are seeking new countries and technologies like mobile shopping as competition intensifies in the U.S. and Europe.
